Vesterbro, Aarhus

Vesterbro is an area in the city of Aarhus, located in the Aarhus C district to the west of the city centre, Midtbyen. The neighbourhood is not as old as the historical centre as it was previously farmland outside the city walls. Development progressed when the city walls were demolished in 1851.

Vesterbro covers an area between the university, Midtbyen, the broad railway yard bordering Frederiksbjerg, Aabyhøj and Aarhus V. The oldest part of Vesterbro is found close to Midtbyen and contains the oldest apartments. Other places of interest include the Aarhus Botanical Gardens, the old Ceres Brewery, the hospital of Amtssygehuset and one of the city's most famous landmarks, Den Gamle By.
The inner part of Vesterbro comprise the residential neighbourhood of Øgadekvarteret (lit. English, the Island street quarter), where most streets are named after Danish islands. The main square, Vesterbro Torv, used to be a market...
