Biography
Soname Yangchen was born in 1973 in the Yarlung Valley at the time of the Cultural Revolution in Tibet, into a noble family, poorly regarded by the Chinese government. As a child, she was passionate for singing, and was sent during 7 years at her aunt in Lhasa for studying, but she was used as a servant by a family loyal to the Chinese regime. At 16, she ran away and crossed the Himalayas by foot to reach India. In 1990, she had a daughter, Decky. Abandoned by her boyfriend, she entrusted her daughter to her husband's family and went to look for a decent life in the West. She became a singer in England, and started to be known worldwide. She began by interpreting traditional songs of her grandmother, and then songs of her compositions. In 2003, she gave a gala at the Royal Opera of London.
